Stage one is a carbon pre-filter — Honeywell calls it Filter A — which captures "dust, lint, fibers and pet fur" and reduces odours. Stage two is the Type R filter, which Honeywell designates True HEPA and which the licensed Honeywell Store describes as capturing "up to 99.97% of airborne particles at 0.3 microns". That efficiency figure is a manufacturer declaration, not an independent certification: no public certification for consumer air purifiers exists.

The part that trips people up is QUANTITY. The Type R filter is one physical size across the whole range, and different purifiers take a different NUMBER of them. A 3-pack is exactly right for one HPA300 and is three years of supply for an HPA100.

How often to change it

That asymmetry is the practical cost of this system and it is the figure to run before buying: an HPA300 consumes three Type R filters a year plus four pre-filters. Honeywell does not publish an hours-per-day assumption behind either interval, so neither can be scaled arithmetically to your own use — watch the pre-filter for visible loading, which on this design is the one you can actually see.

Genuine vs third-party filters

Honeywell's published position on maintenance is unambiguous and it is the part worth carrying over here: "Honeywell HEPA Filters should not be washed or cleaned", and for the pre-filter, "Honeywell Pre Filters should not be washed or cleaned. Attempting to clean or wash an air purifier filter could reduce its effectiveness." That is a statement about washing, not about third-party filters, and we are not going to stretch it into one.

On third-party filters themselves Honeywell publishes no position we could locate. What is true of all of them is that none carries an independent performance measurement, because none exists for replacement filters in this category.

When something goes wrong
