These two end up on the same shortlist constantly, and on paper they look interchangeable: four stages each, a switchable ionizer each, coverage within three per cent of each other. The difference that matters is not in the headline numbers but in who measured them, and in one spec that only one of the two publishes at all.

AHAM's directory states suggested room size is "always based on the air cleaner's ability to clean and circulate the air in the room 4.8 times per hour", using Room Square Feet = Smoke CADR x 1.55. Check: 239 x 1.55 = 370. This formula is AHAM's universal calculation for every Verifide model, not a per-product choice by Winix.	4.8 ACH. “Not published” means the manufacturer does not document that figure for this model. We leave it blank rather than borrow the number from a sibling model — which is how most comparison tables end up wrong.

Both quote a smoke CADR in the same range — 239 cfm for the Winix, 233 for the Coway — but only the Winix figure is AHAM Verifide, meaning an independent lab measured it. Coway’s is Coway’s own. The six-cfm gap is noise; the difference in who stands behind the number is not.
Room size, compared at the same air-change rate
Too close

370 sq ft against 361 sq ft, both stated at 4.8 air changes per hour. That is a genuine like-for-like comparison and the gap is under three per cent — far smaller than the difference your ceiling height or an open doorway will make.

Coway publishes 24 to 53 dB. Winix publishes no decibel figure for the 5500-2 anywhere — not in the 2022 manual, not in the 2025 manual’s specification table, not in the company FAQ. A purifier only works while it is running, and people switch off the ones that turn out to be loud at the speed they need, so an unpublished noise range is a real gap rather than a pedantic one.

Both put the ionizer on its own button. Winix’s PlasmaWave has a dedicated enable/disable control, and Coway documents the Vital Ionizer as optional with its own on/off. Worth knowing on the Winix: the manual states it defaults to on at first power-up, so switching it off is a choice you have to make rather than a setting that stays where you left it after a power cut.
